Althgough I have to guess because you didn't transmit us what laptop and what OS you are using.....
1. Turn up the volume of the PC
A lot of times this is done by pressing a function key (above the number keys) next to the volume logo on it while pressing the Fn key. Look at your PC booklet.
2. Turn up the volume settings of the OS
For Windows XP, there is a taskbar deity that looks like a speaker. Right click it and Open Volueme Control. If you can't see this, move about to Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices Properties and press the Advanced button on the Volume tab.
Here you can adjust the volueme. One thing you should check is not newly the total volume but the volume of individual sound sources such as Wave, SW Synth, disc Player, Microphone. If you can't see these individual settings, change the properties onder the Options menu. I'm guessing that you own the Wave volume low even though your total volume is high.
3. If you are listen to music, there is usally a volume control for that application.
